They were friends, are friends, close friends. Even if the communication between them suddenly stopped, even if the connection between them suddenly gets fuzzy, even if it turned out like that, he knows and she knows, somehow they are still friends. They are still connected. They can still feel it though both are confused and hesitant about it.

He tried. He tried to court her before but sadly her parents do not want him to court her yet. They are still young, too young to be in a relationship. He wanted to say no. we are not that young but go against it because they are her parents and he knows she’ll follow what her parents would say. She is that obedient. Not just obedient but also because for her, her family comes first. And he respects that. Afterall, that attitude is one of the many things he loves about her. But still, he can’t deny the fact that he’s hurt. It hurts.

They continue with their lives after that, as a love team. Even if he didn’t get the approval of her parents, he is not afraid to look at her with all the love he has. He is not afraid to show how much he cares, how much he likes her because they are a pair in front of the screen. He must say, he easily gets jealous with all the guys surrounding her, with all the guys who obviously like her that is why, with the excuse of the word ‘love team’ people would see him always behind her, or a step behind her, or beside her.

He knows. He knows they just want to befriend her. Who won’t? She is a lovely, bubbly, caring, and talented girl. She is all smiles and laugh. And her killer slap is not a turn off. Not really because he can make an excuse to touch her hand or to tickle her afterwards. Well, maybe he is not the only one who thought about that. Killer eyes

Eventually, he sought for an advice from a friend, a close friend that had gone through the same experience.

“what should I do, bret?”

“what would you do, james?”

“dude, I’m asking you”

“I know. Tell me, what would you do? What do you think you should do?”

“stay—”

“go out. Look for another girl. Devon would understand. I know she likes you back. Maybe now is not the right time. Or maybe this is the end for the both of you. We don’t know. But if after three or four years, both of you still have this feeling of connection, why not go for it? You will be in your twenties and I’m sure no one would go against you both.”

“I’ll hurt her if I’d—”

“she doesn’t own you, james. And you don’t own Devon so stop killing Sam and the others with your eyes.” Bret jokingly said

“oh, you noticed?” he replied sheepishly

“it’s so obvious, dude!” and they both laugh, then Bret added “Devon respects you. She would understand and she would respect your decision. The question is, are you willing to look for another girl?” silence engulfed Bret’s condominium.

“maybe”

“dude, explore! And let Devon explore too.”

“she is my ideal girl, Bret. How can you be so sure that I am willing to give Devon up?”

“that doesn’t mean you can’t like Devon anymore. We have this thing called Crush, James. Even if you’ll find yourself a girlfriend, even if you’ll love this girlfriend, it doesn’t mean you are not allowed to have crushes anymore. Oh come on, dude!”

“is this how you put aside, fretzie?” he asked and got a playful punch on his arm.

“shut up”

So he did have a girlfriend. And Bret was right. Devon respects his decision. She even congratulated him. Oh how badly he wants to tell her she is still the one.

It’s not easy. And he wanted to punch Bret right now for telling those things. Because Devon and him are slowly drifting apart. Devon subtly ignores him. And he in return is doing the same.

In her mind, his girlfriend might get jealous of their closeness and she doesn’t want to be the reason if ever they’d have a fight.

In his mind, he already has a girlfriend. But still, his eyes would follow her sometimes. A habit that is not easy to break.

And then it stopped. When their drama series and teen show where both of them are part of ended, the communication between them ended too. He knows it is normal, given that they are now walking on two different roads. Still, why did it end?

Three years had passed. He can still see her on weekdays on the TV. She is an actress.  He can see her every Sunday on ASAP. He can see her six times a week on TV but never personally, maybe once or twice but they never really had time to talk privately. She is still his good friend. They would talk to each other indirectly, like through tweets but never personally. She is still his crush.

She has been partnered to many different actors. He admits, he is a bit happy because she has no permanent ka-love team. Of course, because that means he still have a chance to be her partner. He still wants to work with her, as partners again.  Oh, how he misses her so so much!

When they saw each other a few days ago, he can sense the awkwardness when they both hugged. I miss you! They both only said. Then the night ended without them really talking that much.

But it is enough for him to memorize her features. She becomes more beautiful, her beautiful voice and beautiful face, her bubbly and caring personality, her smile, her eyes. She didn’t change. Ah no, she changed. She becomes lovelier.

It made him think, for the past three years that they were far apart, did she ever think of him? He knows she still supports him. Indirectly, she would tweet things related to him and his work, promoting his work with her own ways. She still cares. They are still friends.

And he still likes her. Does she still feel the same? If ever he would try again, would it be possible for the both of them to be together now that they are on their twenties already?

He would love to. He wants to.

So he tried. He tried again. They reconnected their communication. They would go out with friends. They talk to the phone or send each other daily messages, they tell each other good luck when work starts and good job when work ends. It’s easier now. It’s easier now that he can understand and speaks Filipino and Cebuano. Now he won’t feel out of place when he, her and their other PBB friends would hang out and would talk Cebuano.

Months had passed and the connection they had before is now back. It is even stronger than before. He can still feel their connection. But he is confused. He always let her feel that he loves her through actions and sometimes through words (that would end with a sapak on his arm). But she hasn’t tell him what she truly feels. So he thought of stepping forward.

He tried talking to her parents again. He admits, he was scared. What if it’s not really the age but they just don’t like him for their daughter? What would he do if ever he would be rejected again? He doesn’t even know she loves him in return. But still, he went. He went there, in their house unannounced. She even got shocked when she opened the door and saw him with flowers and chocolates on each hand.

“James!”

“Hi, Devon” he replied with a small smile. He is nervous, damn.

“What are you doing here?” she asked with her dazzling smile that somehow made him relax. She averted her gaze to the flowers and chocolates and laugh.

“Why are you laughing?” he asked, chuckling. “Hindi mo ba ako papapasukin?”

“Oo nga pala, pasok ka.” She answered, opening the door wide, still giggling.

In the living room, she saw her sister who is smiling wide at them and her parents who are sitting side by side in the sofa.

“Magandang gabi po.” He greeted them with a nervous smile. She pats him on the shoulder and ushered him to sit on the other sofa. He cleared his throat. This is it. He told himself. And when he thought she left him in the living room with her parents, she came back with a glass of water and sat beside him.

“Oh, uminom ka muna ng mahimasmasan yang lalamunan mo.” She said with a smile and he laughs. She is right, he needs water. Well, nervousness made his throat dry. After drinking the water, he unconsciously sigh that made her laugh and made her sapak his arm. “what’s with the sigh!?” she said, still laughing. He glanced on her parents. She caught him so she asked “Ano nga pala ang sadya mo?”

“Ah.. ano. I. Ah, first. This is for you” he stuttered as he gives the flowers and chocolates to her. She sweetly smiles at him as she thanked him. “You’re welcome.” He replied with a smile. Then, he averted his gaze to her parents “ano po. Gusto ko po sanang—”

“Manligaw?” her father cut him off. He stiffly nods his head. He glanced at Devon from where she is sitting (beside him) and found her smiling at her parents.

“P-pwede po ba?” he uttered, then cleared his throat because once again, it becomes dry.

“Huwag magpagabi pagnagde-date kayo ah. Kung maaari, isama niyo yung iba, yung sino nga ba ‘yon? Yung mga friends niyo. Ingatan mo ang anak ko, James ha. Magsabi kayo kung may lakad kayo. Mag text din kayo para hindi kami mag-aalala. Alam niyo naman na sa trabaho niyo, ‘d maiiwasan na may iba iba kayong pares. Isipin niyo na trabaho lang yun. Walang selosan. Walang iyakan. Huwag kayong magpadalos-dalos. Huwag—”

“Pa! Nanliligaw pa nga lang eh.” She cut her father off. He blinked. Does this mean…? He slowly opened his mouth as he averted his gaze from Devon’s father to her.

“Does this mean?” he asked, still surprised.

“May basbas ka na kay mama at papa. Matagal na ring binasbasan ka nila ate.” She ended with a smile.

“Really?” he asked and he didn’t stop the smile that bloomed on his face.

Soon after that, the both of them were casted on a movie where they would play as a couple. They are not yet a couple that time, though. They are still on the stage of courting. But the sweetness, the chemistry that they showed on set is true. That’s their feelings being conveyed. When the filming of the movie ended, she also ended the stage of courting. Though it’s already obvious that she’d say yes, it’s still different when she really said the word to him.

They are on the studio rehearsing for their production on ASAP. He is all smiles on set, on rehearsals. And if before, he got jealous when other guys would try to get her attention, now he would just smile and laugh when that guy would receive her slap. And even if other girls would talk to him, he still has half of his attention on her.

“Blooming ah!” says the oh so familiar voice

“Dude! Long time no see!”

“Well, yes. I just came back from my tour” Bret said then looks at her “So? How are you and Devon?” he asked.

He only smiles, wide in return.

“Oh man! I’m so happy for you!”

“Thanks, Bret.” He replied. He half hug his friend at the same time a staff called their attention. “it’s time to rehearse. See you later, dude.” He said and before he can move from his spot, she came rushing to them.

“Bret!” she said and hugged him. “Usap tayo later! Matagal na rin tayong hindi nagkita” she said with a hint of sadness in her voice.

“Okay, we’ll have a date later. Oh! My bad! Dapat nga pala kasama si James” he playfully added which made Devon slap his arms. “Aray, nakakamiss din pala ang mga sapak mo, Devon!” he said and was rewarded with another sapak.

“Okay, tama na yan. Magsisimula na ang rehearsals. Let’s invite the others too. It’s time for a reunion.” He said with a smile as he encircled his arms around her shoulders which was rewarded with a kurot plus smile. He flinched, then took her hands.

“Aaaaaw~” Bret says, teasingly. He playfully punched Bret while she pinched Bret. Then they gave each other a high five and walked on the stage, leaving a laughing Bret on his seat.

People says she is lucky to have him. When in fact, it is the other way around. He is lucky to have her.
